The Big Benefits: Why Little Free Libraries Matter
Libraries are staples in our communities, providing inclusive spaces, avenues to learn, and a community spirit. And on a smaller but equally powerful scale, LFLs do the same. Here are a few benefits they offer.
Connecting Communities
As they sit in front yards, next to parks, and along sidewalks, LFLs invite casual connection and spark conversations between strangers and friends.
When people connect over stories and ideas in this way, it breeds curiosity, shared experiences, and connection.
Boosting Book Access
In areas where public libraries and bookstores are few and far between, an LFL can be like finding an oasis in a desert.
Filling essential gaps, these community-led libraries put books directly into the hands of people who need them most, encompassing all ages, incomes, and backgrounds.
Promoting Literacy and Reading Joy
A recent study highlighted the impact these tiny libraries have in underserved communities.
Of 768 surveyed students, 92 percent reported improved access to books through LFLs. And almost half said they were reading more often. What better way to kick off a lifelong love of reading?
Encouraging Sharing and Generosity
The very nature of LFLs is rooted in trust. Relying on the goodwill of people and their communities, they encourage sharing, generosity, and mutual care without the need for strict rules, overdue fees, or complex checkout systems.
Enhancing Public Library Goals
LFLs work in tandem with public libraries, complementing their mission of spreading a love for reading through the community in an inclusive and accessible way.

Inspired to Share? How to Start Your Own Little Free Library
Starting an LFL is a rewarding way to give back and connect with others in your community, and it couldn’t be easier to do. The official Start a Little Free Library page offers a guide to follow, with steps including:
- Make a Plan. Choose a location that’s visible and accessible, thinking about things like foot traffic, safety, and local regulations. Consider whether you’ll buy a ready-made library or build your own. But make sure it’s suitable for all weather, sturdy, and easy for readers to access.
- Register Your Library with LFL. Although optional, registering your library adds its location to the official LFL World Map, and gives you a charter sign and access to other resources.
- Add Books and Promote. Begin with a diverse range of books to interest your potential readers. Spread the word through flyers, local groups, neighborhood catch-ups, or social media.
- Maintain Your LFL. Keep your library tidy and inviting by mixing up your selection and checking regularly for damaged books.
